Miso Oden in Kuroudokuriya Nenohi

A true Japanese style cuisine in Marunouchi near Tokyo Station.  It has a very stylish and modern ambience inside well mixed with the traditional Japanese atmosphere.

When you come here, you must eat Miso Oden (1,050 Yen), that is vegetables, pork belly and various other articles of food stewed in a hot thick miso sauce.  Every bite in this bowl (Japanese radish, pork belly, eggs, etc) is a pleasure to remember especially with the Nenohi's special unprocessed Japanese sake that takes your breath away.  Almost every dish in Nenohi is unbelievably rich and fresh especially the fish and vegetables, and is also very affordable for this quality.

I have nothing but praises for the delicious dishes at Kuroudokuriya Nenohi.  The place is located at 6th Floor of Oazo building very close to Tokyo Station.

Ultimate Dish : Miso Oden 味噌おでん

Price : 1,050 Yen

Restaurant : Kuroudokuriya Nenohi 蔵人厨ねのひ

Nearest Station : JR Tokyo Station

Toro Salmon and Salmon Egg Don in Uomori

The place where Uomori is located is nothing fancy, but that is the main reason why we like it.  This restaurant is one of those hidden places away from the major streets that you would never stumble upon unless somebody recommends it to you and give you a guide specifically to look out for it.

Most of the dishes on the menu are around 700 - 1,500 Yen for lunch which is very affordable, and the focus here is the freshness of the fish which you can actually see them swimming in the tank near the tables.  It might sound horrible but they will take the fish out from the tank and cook them right away.  Can't be fresh than that!

The atmosphere is very lively and also very traditional as you can see the staffs wearing those traditional clothes.

Overall, the food at Uomori is superb. Simple, honest and delicious. Not to mention that the prices are a bargain for such high quality of food.  Make sure you try Toro Salmon and Salmon Egg Don when you are there.

Ultimate Dish : Toro Salmon and Salmon Egg Don トロサーモン・イクラ丼

Price : 880 Yen

Restaurant : Uomori 魚盛

Shinshu France Kamo Soba in Hikariya

Another place that is worth checking out at Tokyo Station is Hikariya on the 5F of Kitte Building, which has long been a very popular spot with locals.  This soba restaurant originating from the Nagano prefecture has high reputation in Nagano for its Japanese and French fusion cuisine. This soba is Japanese traditional duck soba.

Price is slightly steeper than the usual restaurants from Shinshu France Kamo Soba for 1,680 Yen, but what you get in return is exceptional that will never go wrong.

When it comes to soba, we like to go Hikariya for a firm and reliable meal.

Omurice in Taimeiken

This customer friendly restaurant around Ueno Staton is an excellent place to take your friends and families with especially when you have kids.  Some of you might never heard of the dish "Omurice" before.  It is a contemporary Japanese cuisine consisting of an omelette made with fried rice and is usually topped with ketchup.  And kids love it.

The Omurice in Taimeiken (1,050 Yen) is mind-blowing which you can see on the picture beautifully prepared.  The rice perfectly fried with soft chicken meat and fresh vegetables inside texturized with an golden egg.   The best part?  This first class omurice is affordably priced under 1,500 Yen.

We would go back again just for that.

Cold Bukkake Udon with Agedama and Fresh Egg in Nenotsu

If you are a fan of Udon noodle, it is impossible to not like Nenotsu's Cold bukkake with agedama and fresh egg (700 Yen).  The noodles are cooked perfectly, very springy and al dente which is exactly the way we like our Udon to be.

When we first had such simple but very special bowl of Udon from Nenotsu, we were stunned how such a small restaurant in a hidden street could serve such high standard bowl.  Not only simple and genuine as you can see on the picture, but also looks beautiful and powerful.

I would suggest to come here all the way, but if you happen to be around this area, you should definitely check out.

Ultimate Dish : Cold Bukkake Udon with Agedama and fresh egg 冷ぶっかけうどん、揚げ玉と生たまご

Oyakodon in Torisanwa

You will realize how soft the chicken is when you eat oyakodon in ToriSanwa. The brand is called Kochin from Nagoya where they raise chickens in special way to make the meat much more tenderized.

The shop only has 6 counter seats available, so you will not be able to sit back and relax while you are eating. Apparently the place was built for people who just eat and go in less than 15 minutes but we personally think they should provide places to have their valuable chicken at more relaxing places so that people can appreciate their special chicken more. We recommend this place to you if you want to try the real oyakodon. They are exceptional.

Tanmen in Tonari

Two keywords to explain why this place is so popular for locals.  "Volume" and "healthy".  You may have a stereotype that ramen is oilly, salty and unhealthy, but ramen in Tonari is probably the opposite.

A lot of vegetables on top as you can see on the picture and the essence of the soup actually come from those vegetables. Surprisingly or not,  the taste of its ramen is magnificent which might break a lot of people's stereotype of vegetable based rame are not good enough compare to the meat based.

The healthy ramen that has volume in Tonari is simply outstanding. Make sure you try Tanmen when you are here.

Oyakodon in Sasaoka

Located at 5F of Shin Maru Building near Tokyo Station, Sasaoka is a chic restaurant which offers decent and well made food at very reasonable prices.  Most of the dishes on the menu are around 1,000 - 2,000 Yen for lunch.

The focus here is Oyakodon (a bowl of rice topped with chicken and eggs) for 1,300 Yen.  It is quite rare to see mushrooms inside oyakodon as they sometimes taste too strong and it might ruin the whole better part of the bowl, but on the contrary, it was marvellous.  I would go back again just for that.

The space in the room also is very well furnished and sophisticated, with so much thoughts put into every detail.

Price : 1,300 Yen

Restaurant : Sasaoka 笹岡

Ebiten Soba in Kamakura Issa Ann

Kamakura Issaan is one of the best places to have soba (buckwheat noodles) around Tokyo station. We have been to this place many times as soba here is spectacular.  It's always nice to have a favorite place where you are quite sure of the taste.

If you are really into Soba, you should know that it is best to have it by "Zaru" and not in a hot broth like how we had it today. You dip the soba noodle into the sause (or rather soup) and try if it is chewy enough. You can't actually feel 100% how it is like if it's in a hot broth as hardness of the noodle will vary depending on the temperature.

But today, we wanted to try the hot one since we already knew "zaru soba" here was excellent although we were not expecting the hot one to be this good.  The deep fried shrimp on top of soba was also excellent.  Perhaps this restaurant may also be able to open a Tempura restaurant. That is how well they prepare the deep fried for the soba. The soup was very tender and noodles matched perfectly with the soup. The hot broth in Issa Ann was favorably balanced and we even thought this could be one type of different soba cuisine that can stand out individually other than "zaru".

Ultimate Dish : Ebiten Soba 海老天蕎麦

Price : 1,680 Yen

Restaurant : Kamakura Issa Ann (鎌倉 一茶庵 丸山)

It is not difficult to find out why Ikaruga is always full of poeple.

Pork and dried fish based soup ramen topped with everything!  It comes with big young bamboo, thick char shu pork, egg, and nori (sea weed).  Once you taste this mild soup with smooth and firm textured noodle, you will know why people come back to eat this bowl!

The Tokyo Station Ramen (980 Yen) here is exceptional and a "must order", while the other ramen are very decent.

Beef Sinew Simmered by Miso Sauce in Rakan

The beef sinew simmered by miso sauce. A little bit lacks the volume for a set menu especially for guys but tasted very well (the miso sauce matches with beef perfectly). Not many restaurants provide oden type of set menus around Tokyo Station so in that sense, it was worth trying. This menu is their best recommendation so when you come close by Tokyo station, it may be a good idea to stop by this restaurant. Good oriental interior also was a plus.

Curry Udon in Konaya

Who would have imaged mixing two completely different food and put them in one bowl by calling it the "Curry Udon"?  Some people have never heard of udon with curry before and they might have even thought Japanese people sometimes mix things in strange manner, but as how Wikipedia explains (curry udon is the Udon in a curry-flavoured soup which may also include meat or vegetables), it is widely recognized as one complete dish in Japanese food culture.

The curry udon (1,350 Yen)  in Konaya uses the excellent springy and al dente noodles and well boiled soup mixed with the fine spices that make the soup speical for the curry udon.

Konaya's curry udon is exceptionally good and can even say that it has elevated curry udon as one sophisticated dish from one simple mixture of food. You have got to try it if you haven't tried it yet.

Chicken Curry with Spinach and Egg in Hot Spoon

When it comes to Japanese curry, we like to go Hotspoon for a firm and reliable meal.  It is the kind of place where you will get addicted and makes you want to order everything from the menu.

All curry will be brought with an iron plate which you can see them still boiling inside.  Among many tempting choices on the menu, the chicken curry with spinach and eggs (800 Yen) is just exceptionally good. We have nothing but praises for this curry which was phenomenal.  It is our "must go" place in Tokyo Station for a reasonable and fine local food.

Most of the dishes on the menu are under 1,000 Yen. The long queue during lunch times proofs the popularity of this restaurant.

Misokatsu Don in Kushihan

Miso katsu, the fried pork with miso sauce, is the most popular lunch set menu in Kushi Han. We didn't know pork matches this much with miso sauce which was a good surprise for us.

We like the way they simply (or rather directly) put all slices of katsu on top of rice as it seemed they have the great confidence in what they serve. Just the miso katsu with an egg on top of rice.

It has a convincing taste and we really enjoyed it.  Few veggie sticks for the side menu and warm soup balance out the set menu and that gives the main dish (miso katsu) tastes even better. We would go back again just for their miso katsu.
