Robot Restaurant (ロボットレストラン) in Shinjuku

Robot Restaurant in Shinjuku

Robot Restaurant is one of the most famous themed restaurants in Japan.  It is entertaining, astonishing, overwhelming, crazy, and perhaps equally pointless. That is how hard it is to describe the experience in one word about the Robot Restaurant, one of the most well-known attractions in Tokyo. Once you go inside the restaurant, you will find a considerable amount of colorful flashing lights and mirrors with metallic surfaces, the lasers and glitz, and the world’s most dexterous androids to meet the great wonders of technology.

The amazing entertainment with all kinds of robots including dinosaurs, sharks, pandas, action heroes and even the beautiful lady androids have their own roles to play operated by more than 20 staffs remotely.  The combination of the alluring showgirls and the robots dancing and making actions with the unforgettable techno sounds that persistently echoes in your head create an atmosphere of both craze and mystique, proving that there is no places like that in the world.

When you go to Tokyo, it is a must go place. One stage is about 7,000 yen (approximately $60 US) and we would recommend you to make reservations in advance. Enjoy the astonishing entertainment in Robot Restaurant!

Zauo (ざうお) in Shinjuku

Zauo in Shinjuku

Zauo has an astonishing scenery from the entrance where you will find a giant wooden boat set in the middle of the room making it look as if it is floating on the water.  Then the next unusual or rather shocking scenery you will come across is the considerable amount of live fish swimming in the water right next to the boat.

In Zauo, you can experience to catch the fish and eat it right away after the chef cooks it for you. Have seats in the rooms that are very Japanese style which are as good as the ones on the boat, but if you want to have the seats on the boat where you can see people enjoying fishing, it would be better to book them in advance.

The effect of the massive boat placed in the center of the room is really overwhelming, but what makes it so different about Zauo compare to the other restaurants that serve raw fish is, not only the entertainment they provide for the customers, but also the freshness of the fish.

How fresh can it get if you can catch the fish that is still swimming in the water? We have caught the red snapper (2,499 yen) from the water without a bait (100 yen) and chose to enjoy it in both raw and fried.  You may select 2 ways you would like the chefs to prepare the fish for you and they will cook and deliver it to your table right away.  Though, if you do not have any grudge against how to cook the fish, it is strongly recommended that you try the raw.  You may also enjoy the red snapper miso soup (399 yen), fresh seaweed salad (714 yen), and perhaps some sushi and tempura if you are still hungry. They are all exceptional without doubt.

Sengoku Buyuden (戦国武勇伝) in Shinjuku

sengoku buyuden in Shinjuku

For those who are interested in Japanese history during segoku period (age of civil wars, around 1550-1600), we recommend Sengoku Buyuden.  Many Japanese people (especially men) love Sengoku warriors who fought to rule over the country by wearing those beautiful well made armors.

This themed restaurant has a great style to create a splendid ambiance of the old times of Japan.  Once you reach the entrance, the colorful armors that majestically stand welcome you to the Sengoku world where you can also see the well ordered printed flags of the family crests of those warriors.

You will be guided to the room where you will find the famous warriors names on the wall and the antiquated hanging scrolls written in Japanese.  Whether you may be able to read them or not, it will definitely be a mind blowing scene in one of your precious experiences in Japan!  The space in the room is very well furnished and sophisticated, with so much thoughts put into every detail.

We have ordered the most recommended dishes from the menu such as the fresh water clam bamboo steamer (840 yen), three different fresh raw fish (1,029 yen), kabuki miso cheese kushi (924 yen), with jindori (encampment) dessert (924 yen) to finish our meal.  You may also order Chinmi Santen Mori (three different seasonal tidbits) (819 yen) which is a secret dish that is not on the menu.  It comes with the Japanese castle tower as you can see on the picture.  If you are interested, you can ask the staff for today's Chinmi Santen Mori and make them surprized (they may not be able to serve them if they are out of stock).

We have nothing but praises for this restaurant.  All food in Sengoku Buyuden was phenomenal.  Last but certainly not least, enjoy the precious moment with the Sengoku style Japanese sake which may spur your appetite!

Throughout the meal, we observed that the staffs here were very friendly as well as lively towards all customers.  This is actually quite important to make difference impressionably to all restaurants.

Alice in Wonderland (魔法の国のアリス) in Shinjuku

Alice in Wonderland
Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland is one of the oddest themed restaurants in Tokyo where you may find an astonishing scenery of the world of Alice once you pass the charmingly designed book shaped door at the entrance.  The key red color that creates the virtual world of Alice perfectly matches with the main decoration of the hearts that are set beautifully above the heart shaped table in the center of the room. They also have the cute menus with the heart shaped keys, the round shaped chairs, and the staffs who are costumed as Alice and bunny all blending quite well with the surroundings which also seem nicely unrealistic.  The decorations of the cards set above some of the tables are also outstanding.  If you ever had a chance to visit Alice in Wonderland, take the seats where you can see either the heart or the card decorations from close.

Among many tempting dishes on the menu, we have asked the Bunny for "the most recommended" and decided to order Alice in Magical World (1,020), the Red Rose (980 Yen), and Happy Common Place Day (880 Yen) for the drinks.  The Alice in Magical World is the grapefruit and mango based tropical liquor and the Happy Common Place Day with fireworks is the sparkling grapefruits cocktail with tapioca.  They are not only exceptional in taste but also visually charming.

We have ordered a Green Caterpillar Uncle (520 Yen) as we like avocados with olives for the appetizer.  The Beef Meat Sauce Spaghetti (980 Yen) for the main dish which comes with Cheshire Cat's face.  For the dessert to finish the meal, the Cheshire Cat's Mixed Berry Parfait with Prayer in Magic Wand (800 Yen) was quite good which also comes with cat's face.  We liked all the dishes we had carefully selected  and enjoyed the ideas to add more fun to the dishes by making the faces of Cheshire Cat and Green Caterpillar Uncle.

When you come to Alice in Wonderland, make sure to have the good seats where you can see the heart and card shaped lights.  Enjoy the uniqueness!

Lock Up (ロックアップ) in Shinjuku

Lock Up
Lock Up

The Lock Up is indisputedly one of the most bizarre themed restaurants in Tokyo in terms of pursuing realism in both interior design and the entertainment they perform to knock the customers flat.

The adventure begins as soon as the elevator door opens at 7F.  You will have to pass the skeleton and walk through the darkness to reach the entrance where you must put your hand in the guillotine hole in order to open the prison gate (Don't be scared! They won't bite you!).  Once the gate opens, you go inside and wait for the lady wardens to put the handcuffs on you (only 1 person from the group).  Then they will charge you for crime and lock you up in one of the prison rooms!

There are many unique drinks that you would never see anywhere around the world such as Medusa's eyeball (829 Yen) and Pink Vaccine (724 Yen) which might make you hesitate to drink at first because of how hideous they look.  On the other hand, the food menu looks rather cute and entertaining.  Among many tempting choices on the menu, we had ordered some spooky dishes like cross shaped pizza (819 Yen), skeleton shaped hamburg (609 Yen), eyeball shaped cheese with olives on top (504 Yen), and prison cake (609 Yen) for the dessert. This restaurant is an entertaining restaurant and not the refined restaurant that serves exceptional dishes and drinks that take your breath away, but it is definitely worth to experience if you are in Japan.

The most thrilling moment was the monster attraction show they perform few times a day.  We won't tell you much about this so that you can see and feel the excitement by yourself when you are there, but it was absolutely astonishing even when you could clearly imagine what they were going to do. You can never watch the monsters without making your hands sweat!

Kyomachi Koishigure Shinkan (京町恋しぐれ新館 新宿) in Shinjuku

Kyomachi Koishigure is one of the rare restaurants in Japan where you can experience the real traditional scene of the old town of Kyoto, so called Kyomachi.  The fantastic Kyo style seats set above the creek welcoming you at the entrance are absolutely beautiful and fascinating which makes you want to walk around for a while and take photos.  The food in Kyomachi Koishigure, on the other hand, are mostly very healthy lightly flavored Kyoto style and they are indeed surprisingly delicious.  The recommendations here are Sushi (salmon, salmon roe, sea urchin, tuna), Five types of sashimi, Kyoto style fresh vegetables, Beef sinew in miso stew served with garlic toast, Kyoto style pickles, eel with cooked white rice in hot green tea, and perhaps varieties of Matcha (green tea) dessert to finish your perfect meal.  The impeccable staffs that are very polite and well trained would also add satisfaction to your precious moment in Japan.  The restaurant that is creating an astonishing ambience of the traditional Kyoto with splendid Japanese food always make your friends and families on your table happy with full of surprises.  When you are visiting Shinjuku, make sure to meal here.

Ehon no Kunino Alice
Ehon no Kunino Alice

If you have been to Alice in Wonderland in the past and liked it, you may as well try Ehon no Kunino Alice too to see the astonishing world of Alice again. Only when this time, you are not going to the wonderland, but to the world of the picture book where you will find whole bunch of clippings from the picture book in the story of Alice. The standing card soldier, the huge picture book of Alice placed next to the fancy tables, and all kinds of other cute decorations surrounded in the rooms are making the amazing scenery of the world of Alice as if you have strayed into the world where you may not be able to tell if such unrealistic world really exists.

Shimantogawa (四万十川) in Yurakucho Tokyo

Shimantogawa
Shimantogawa

Shimantogawa is one of the most unique restaurants where you can experience a whole new world of Kouchi Prefecture.  Once you step inside this restaurant, you will find a beautiful creek right next to your seats and a big old tree in the middle of the room that is creating an outstanding atmosphere of the pure Japanese style while listening to the beautiful sound of the stream at the table.

Kouchi Prefecture, which is located at Shikoku area (the southern part of Japan), has established their own cuisine called Warayaki (straw firing).  When you come to this restaurant, you must not leave without trying their bonito (katsuo) roasted over the straw-fueled fire which comes with the savory smell of early-summery aroma.  You can paste some salt on the surface of its piece with a little bit of wasabi to add some subtle flavor.  Be prepared to be shocked.  It is so delicious and profound which may put you in a situation to decide on whether you should do a second one later.  The pleasant savory of the fresh roasted bonito just perfectly matches with the special tasty salt with wasabi that wows customers with every bite.  Needless to say, it is the signature dish in this restaurant and the most popular menu for the locals.

For the side dishes, you may order some white asparagus, beef tongue, and vegetables that are all straw fired once and they are all exceptional without doubt.  If you want to try the new flavor since you are in Japan, they also have some horse meat and whale meat which are actually very common for the locals especially the horse meat.  But if are against having them, better not try.

In Shimantogawa, you can have their high quality food in the best pure Japanese style atmosphere while having delicious Japanese sake from Kouchi Prefecture.  When you had a chance to visit Yurakucho area, make sure to meal here.

Hoshizora no Nakae (星空の中へ) in Shinjuku

Hoshizora no Nakae
Hoshizora no Nakae

If you want to arrange one of the most romantic time in Tokyo for your dinner, it may be a good idea to visit Hoshizora no Nakae (meaning "into the star" in Japanese) with an astonishing sky view from the 50th floor of the skyscraper in Shinjuku, while enjoying their exceptional Japanese cuisines including the roasted matsutake mushrooms, golden roasted lobster, conger eel and sea-gudgeon tempuras, fresh raw sashimi and sushi, extremely tender beef fillet steak, and more.  They are not only delicious that amazes people with every bite, but also brings you the most luxurious time in one of the highest places to have first class dinner in Tokyo.  The perfect way to finish your meal, on the other hand, is to have their super fresh seasonal fruits that are pleasantly sweet and refreshing which leaves everyone on your table happy at the end.

You may have to walk few minutes to come to this restaurant, but in terms of its higher standard service, the terrific cost performance, and the perfect ambience, it is absolutely worth to visit which would give you one great experience in Japan especially for those who are not from the cities with many skyscrapers and fancy restaurants.

If there is any other places that are more romantic than this one where they can maintain the same quality for food in such reasonable price in the center of the city, we are happy to introduce them along with Hoshizora no Nakae whenever we find one. Needless to say, there is always an excellent match between the tall buildings and the fine drinks, and this restaurant is no exception.

Warayakiya (わらやき屋) in Ginza Yurakucho

Kouchi Prefecture, which is located at Shikoku area (the southern part of Japan), has established their own cuisine called Warayaki (straw firing).

You may be able to see the well trained chefs straw fire up to 800 - 1000 degrees to roast their fresh ingredients on their frying pan and pulls it out from the fire at the best timing.  Try their bonito (katsuo) roasted over the straw-fueled fire which comes with the savory smell of early-summery aroma.  Bonito is actually a tough one to handle as it might smell too fishy if not roasted enough but taste unpleasantly dried if roasted too much.  So they must go right in the middle and that makes it a perfect "warayaki". It is the signature dish in this restaurant and the most popular menu for the locals.  The restaurant also has vegetables and chicken straw fired the same way and they are without a doubt exceptional.

The atmosphere inside is very Japanese style and spacious enough to feel coziness.  The staffs are amazingly polite and caring and we also loved them very much.  Meanwhile, they also have this short attraction prepared during the meal to entertain customers using the traditional clapping instrument from the Kouchi Prefecture and that would surely make all of you on the table happy.  When you visit Ginza or Yurakucho area, make sure to meal here and have their outstanding Warayaki.

Ninja Akasaka (ニンジャ アカサカ) in Akasaka Mitsuke

Ninja Akasaka
Ninja Akasaka

When you first get to this place, you may find it difficult to find the restaurant as there is only one small entrance door that stands alone right next to Tokyu Plaza.  As if it is hiding like a Ninja with the black uniform, the entrance to the Ninja restaurant is also hiding in the darkness by the black door almost provocatively.

If you successfully find the entrance, go inside and you will be able to meet a Ninja guide who will be leading you to so called "The Village".  Your adventure begins from here.  You will need to follow the Ninja guide who knows how to get to "The Village" by going through a few hidden doors and taking small stairs.  Watch your head as the lights are dim and the ceilings are sometimes very low!

After you get to "The Village" with the help of the friendly and polite Ninja guide, you will be led to one of the tables.  The Ninja staff will explain how this place works and the recommendations of the menu.  Go ahead and order some unique drinks like Kingyo (1,000 yen) and AI-BA (1,200 yen) first.  For your information, you may have to search for the button hiding under the table to call the Ninja staffs whenever you need them again next time.  For your food, it would be nice to order Shredded vegetable salad (850 yen) and Shuriken star-blades grissini with cream pate de foie gras dip (1,000 yen) to start with and perhaps the snow crab and grapefruit served with a sword trick (1,800 yen) and turban shell bombs with garlic butter (1,600 yen) may also be interesting to have.  You may also find it exotic to see their black fried chicken (1,500 yen) which is something you would never see anywhere around the world.  There are many other interesting menus you can experience to see so do not hesitate to ask the friendly Ninjas around you.

For those groups who each paid over 3,000 yen for the meal will get to see the Ninja magic show right in front of the table.  Don't make light of that Ninja fellow though!  The Ninja magicians are very talented and they actually perform outstanding magics in front of the customers.  We have enjoyed being stunned by all his tricks for the whole time while he was performing.

The restaurant has also made a great success in creating a splendid ambiance of the Ninja Village with full of surprises.  It is actually quite fun just by walking around.

So enjoy the amazing dishes and performances in Ninja Akasaka.  We are sure it will be one of your unique experiences in your wonderful journey in Japan.

Alcatraz ER (アルカトラズ イーアール) in Shibuya

Alcatraz ER in Shibuya
Alcatraz ER in Shibuya

One of the most unique and eccentric scenes you will encounter among various kinds of themed restaurant in Tokyo must be the Alcatraz ER in Shibuya where you will find the shocking skeleton skull at the entrance and the fake dead bodies laying under the floor as you pass by (and more!).

You will be asked what kind of symptom you are suffering from at the entrance and they will even give you a medical chart (just to let you know that this is a hospital for the prisoners).  We told the charming nurse that we had stomachache today.  She will give a fake electrical shock to fix your symptom (it’s funny) and then puts one of us a handcuffs to take us to one of the prison cells in its crazy hospital.

After taking seats in one of the prison cells where you can touch the iron bars right next to your table, you may as well order something spooky for your drink to start with such as Alians Blood (780 Yen) and Intracerebral Party (880 Yen).  Just hit the iron bars with the metal stick few times and the very friendly nurses will come to take your orders right away.

On the other hand, the food menu looked relatively normal compare to the weird looking drinks.  We have ordered Deep Fried Chicken in Jailhouse (580 yen), Iron Plate Pork Kimuchi (680 Yen), and Stone Cooked TKG (580 Yen) respectively.  Some might say it is an entertaining restaurant that is not really focusing on the taste but what we truly liked about Alcatraz ER was its honest and fine taste of the food they served for us. They were delicious.

It is definitely one of the most unique places to eat in Tokyo with full of entertainment. We are very sure it won’t let you down especially if you like to see more unique part of Japan during your visit.

Nanairo Temariuta (七色てまりうた) in Shinjuku

Nanairo Temariuta in Shinjuku
Nanairo Temariuta in Shinjuku

Temari is a traditional Japanese handball used as a toy and gradually became an art as the time passed, with the functional stitching becoming more decorative and detailed.  Nanairo Temari Uta has made a sensational way of making the Temari (that is merely an old colorful object) well known and useful by turning it into a colorful cozy room for people to sit.  Once you go inside the giant Temari, there is a round table placed in the center of the room and comfortable seats that goes around it making it cozy and easy to have chat with families and friends.  The main color used for the Temari seats is red which makes the whole ambiance quite passionate and fairytale-like.

The focus in this restaurant are the round shaped Temari sushi (price varies between 150 - 350 yen for each depends on what you want to order) and tsukune (chicken meatloaf which price also varies between 280 - 320 yen).

We have enjoyed salmon eggs, engawa (meat at the base of a flatfish fin), young yellowtail, and medium fatty tuna for sushi and grated daikon with ponzu vinegar.

For your information, if you want to have seats at one of those giant temaris, it would be better to make a booking in advance.

Capcom Bar (カプコンバー) in Shinjuku

Capcom Bar in Shinjuku
Capcom Bar in Shinjuku

What makes this unique bar so attractive for the locals and foreigners may be because of their special affinity for the popular characters in Street Fighters, Resident Evil (Bio Hazard), Basara, Ace Attorney, etc, where they might feel the sense of unity for recognizing what those characters are in the CAPCOM games worldwide.

The staffs here are good entertainers who would perform you a "short play" whenever you order drinks (it is part of their friendly service so don't count on it too much).  They have played the Street Fighters for us when we ordered Guile's Sommersalt Kick (730 Yen) and Edmond Honda's tea (450 Yen) for our drink which was very amusing.  They will probably give you "Ha do ken!" if you ever had a chance to order Ryu's cocktail and perhaps "Tatsumaki Senpu Kyaku!" if you order Ken's special drink respectively.  But most importantly, we found that all staffs here are enjoying to perform in front of the customers by creating the atmosphere very lively and energetic.  We had a lot of fun watching the screens and also enjoyed having a chat with one of the friendly staffs who was very easy to talk to.

Among many CAPCOM oriented choices on the menu, the Brain Cake (680 Yen) from Resident Evil (Bio Hazard) was their best recommendation.  Some may think that this is just an entertaining bar that has no applaudable dishes, but the flavor of this cake was, in fact, exceptional which actually made us quite surprised.  Of course,  the knife sticked on the brain shaped cake looked very creepy as you can see on the picture but what you get in return is an outstanding Mont Blanc!

We heard there are lot of fans of this bar and some of them even show up wearing those character's costumes.  You might bump into one of them with strange outfit at night if you are lucky!
