This shop is one of the most popular ramen shops around Ueno that specializes in miso based.  The soup is made of dense miso that contains the mixture of animal bones which blends well with its thick yellow noodles.  When it comes to having dense soup with the higher salt, the thick noodles with good chewy texture always remain as a plus.  You may also add extra vegetables on top of the noodles upon request and make the bowl look even gorgeous.  Not to mention that the price 790 yen is a bargain for such higher quality of ramen.

What makes Chodaikichi's ramen so special for the locals must be their soup in its Tokusei Ramen (Special Ramen).  The slice of thick bamboo shoots with fine seasoned egg and seaweeds on top of the mixture of pork bone and soy sauce based creamy soup.  When you take two or three strands of thick noodles that are neatly dipped in the soup, you would realize how dense the soup is coiling around the noodles and your chopsticks with the alluring smell. The soup is thick enough to feel its salty taste and has a strong punch in it.  The price (1050 yen) is just a little bit steeper for the ramen, but the quality is, without a doubt, a top notch.

The chic black ramen shop around the corner in Ueno is Musashi Bukotsu where you can listen to nice music under dimmer lights while having special noodles of concentrated brown soup, so called Tsukemen 810 yen.  If  you are really hungry, you may order something called Bukotsu Tsukemen 1080 yen instead which comes with the 2 astonishing size of roasted pork fillet with tasty boiled egg.  The standard Tsukemen comes with a large slice of thick roasted pork fillet on top of the shiny al dente noodles.  Once you dip 2 or 3 strands of noodles into its delicious soup of great smell, you would realize it is the pork bone and fish based which of course is not oily and heavy at all but rather lighter and sweeter in a unique way and the taste is absolutely exceptional.  You would understand why the locals got addicted to it and make lines to come here everyday.  After you are done with the noodles and the roasted pork fillet, you can add some liquid called "soup wari" to make the soup pleasantly lighter and drinkable to finish a bowl.

The focus in Kouzuke Tomirai Hompo is the Tokusei Tsukemen 880 yen.  The noodles are thicker enough to feel the "koshi", the outstanding chewiness of the al dente which the shop has great confidence in.  The slices of thin roasted pork fillet and thick bamboo shoots, on the other hand, are neatly prepared right next to the fresh green onions, seaweed, mizuna green, and a refreshing lemon on top of the mixture of delicious pork bone, crustacean, and seafood based soup.  It may be a little bit difficult to find out the mixture and which ingridients really are based for the soup as there are so many things already mixed inside, but it is in fact an amazing bowl of Tsukemen that is quite sophisticated with so much originality and thoughts put into every detail.  We would definitely go back to have their delicious Tokusei Tsukemen again.

Another breath taking ramen in Ueno.  Zipang’s ultimate bowl of ramen, which does not contain lards due to shop's health oriented mind, is a perfect healthy mixture of pork bone based soup with natural oil made of fresh prawns.  Ebi Ginjo Ramen 750 yen, which we have absolutely nothing but praises, is a stunningly beautiful and delicious bowl of ramen that wows customers with every sip.  The toppings include two slices of splendid broiled chicken chashu with cloud ears and the fresh green onions with sakura shrimps on top of the medium thin noodles neatly prepared in the soup that have great chewy texture.  Once you try it and you will realize how tasty and deep the soup in Zipang is which takes your ramen journey to the next level.  It is one rare experience to enjoy something different besides typical soy sauce, miso, or tonkotsu based ramen in Japan too.

Every time when we write about Ichiran, one of the biggest ramen chain shops in Japan, we would always have to say it is the "King" of pork bone based ramen from Hakata.  It is just too good to be true.  The soup is almost like a perfection of Tonkotsu based that wows customers with every sip.  It is very tasty which you can feel the deepness of it and how sophisticated a bowl of ramen is being so different from the other ramens outside.  The thin noodles have a pleasant chewiness which blend perfectly well with the soup and the fresh toppings that leaves everyone completely speechless.  On the other hand, the decor is not really great for the families where all seats are separated by the partitions as this place is extremely stoic about being so systematic in how to order and to eat, but most of the people understand that already and take that as part of fun.  The Ichiran is also open for 24 hours making it convenient for the customers to stop by.

Yamabe is one of the most popular restaurants for pork cutlet, so called Tonkatsu around Ueno Station.  The set menu for lunch called Rosu Katsu, which means pork loin, is extremely affordably priced at 700 yen for such high quality.  You would be amazed of the thick pork loin that is super tender with crispy outer layer beautifully wrapping the meat juice inside.  The best way to have them is you put some of the unbelievably delicious Tonkatsu sauce with the mustard on top of the crispy layer to enjoy the slices with the white rice and shredded vegetables.  We have nothing but praises for them for such high standard meal under 1000 yen.  On top of that, the miso soup and some Japanese pickles for the side dish are also superb.  You would imagine that Yamabe has a reliable outlet that is very professional and impeccable. You may see some people lining up around lunch time only to have their exceptional pork cutlet, but it is definitely worth waiting.

Isen Honten has been around Ueno for more than 80 years now which is famous for its extremely tender pork cutlet that you can even cut it in half by using chopsticks. Being able to "cut with chopsticks" is one of the best compliment a food can get when we want to express the tenderness of the food. The birth place of the Tonkatsu sandwich, where you would often find them at the train stations, is here at Isen Ueno which you might have tried them before in the past.  When you are in Isen, there are several good choices on the menu you would have to decide which one to order from Yawaraka Tonkatsu that is super tender pork cutlet prepared with low heat, Toku Rosu Katsu to enjoy the delicious standard pork cutlet that represents the 80 years of history, and of course the Katsu Sandwich which has already become well known in Japan.  The sauce they are using probably has some sourness in it unlike most of the Tonkatsu restaurants that offer relatively sweeter sauce, but it is absolutely marvelous.  The decor, on the hand, leaves the ambience of Showa times that reminds locals of good old times of Japan which seems quite retro for such famous place. The restaurant also has a very good service, and you can see the employees here works very hard. Even though the building is old, the restaurant is kept tidy and these are the reasons why it has been the most loved restaurant since its foundation on 1930. When you are in Ueno, make sure to meal here.

Manpuku offers one of the best fried oysters around Ueno station that attracts customers incessantly even when the restaurant is located at a small hidden street where you would never stumble upon unless somebody recommends it to you and give you a direction to specifically look out for it.  Though, once you successfully find this restaurant, we would recommend you to order their exceptional fried oysters by putting their special sauce on top which makes those crispy deep fried oysters even tasty.  The size of the oysters are also larger enough to leave everyone happy and the fried eggs that come with them actually do great job emphasizing the deeper taste of those oysters.  If you like fried oyster, which is a kind of food that is commonly eaten in Japan, or never have tried it before, give youself a try!  They are absolutely delicious and the quality of the oyster in Manpuku is a top notch without a doubt.  The fresh fried oyster set, so called Kaki fry set, is affordably priced at 1100 yen which is really a shocking price for such a higher quality of meal.

Keijoen is one of the retro restaurants of 80s ambience in Ueno that offers excellent kalbi (marinated barbecued ribs), rosu (sirloin meat), and liver for a very reasonable price.  The restaurant looks notably outdated from outside but you would understand, once you have their fresh meat, why there are so many steady fans coming here everyday for their grilled meat.  The freshness and quality of the food are indeed outstanding in this restaurant and we also like the friendly staffs who are always willing to give customers good advice which parts of meat are best to have today.  If you are looking for the first rated meat in Ueno for a bargain price either for your lunch or for dinner, we recommend you to visit Keijoen with confidence.

Tokyoen, located at Korean town in Ueno, is well known for the skirt steak so called Harami or perhaps may be better to say they made the skirt steak well known in Japan.  The restaurant is so small and seems really outdated from ouside that you would not imagine if this is really the one that is famous, yet the fresh Yakiniku meat they offer for the customers are just splendid.  This is a kind of place where you cannot judge a book by its cover.  Among many tempting choices on the menu, Harami and Hormones are just exceptionally good which you might get caught in a situation whether you should order a second one or not.  Tokyoen, on the other hand, is also quite popular for the celebrities in Japan, proving its highest quality.  When you are looking for a good grilled meat restaurant in Ueno, Tokyoen is the must go place without doubt.
