Sushidai is the most recommended sushi restaurant in Tsukiji market.  The freshness of sushi toppings here are a top-notch with reasonable price.  You can order a set menu (Omakase set) for 3,900 yen which usually costs at least 10,000 yen in other places.  That may be why it seems there is always a long line in front of the restaurant from 5AM in the morning!  If you ever had a chance to enter this restaurant without queuing, you are very lucky.  Your friends will get jealous if they hear about it.

The best part about Tsukiji is you can have fresh fish gathered from all around Japan. The shapes of these islands in Japan are long and thin from north to south which makes it easier to get best sushi toppings such as sea urchin from Hokkaido and high quality tuna from Okinawa (as if it is making an all-star team of fish!). If you want to have high quality sushi in Tsukiji outer market we would definitely recommend you Sushidai. There are course menus also available from 1,500 - 3,500 yen.

Tsukiji market was opened in 1935 and SUSHISEI opened its door in 1889. SUSHISEI has a history longer than Tsukiji market and the reputation they have earned through the past is exactly what they have accomplished. In Japanese, Tokyo style sushi is often considered as "EDO-MAE" from Edo-period (1603–1868). "Never change style of EDO-MAE" is in fact, SUSHISEI's catch line. Let's take a bite of long history at SUSHISEI!

As this traditional food has a long history in Japan, it is no surprize that they have also categorized types of sushi as conservative and progressive.  And KAGURA TUKIJI has both of those elements.  The "red" vinegar, which has been used since the Edo-period (1603–1868), is very conservative.  When it comes to ABURI sushi on the other hand, generally sushi toppings are raw, but they grill them for few seconds instead (that's the meaning of ABURI).  And that is quite unique and progressive.  At last ABURI sushi is not only offered with soy sauce but also with rock salt.  Some people may argue about having sushi lightly grilled with rock salt is no longer a sushi, but we recommend you to enjoy the innovativation of this traditional food no matter how conservative the industry was.  You know you are the one who decide what is best!

Even considering the fact that one of Japanese people's favorite dishes is tuna and the year's first auction for tuna in Tsukiji fish market always becomes a big news in Japan, would they get crazier than this one?  222-kilogram (489-pound) blue fin tuna was sold for a record 155.4 million yen ($1.5 million USD)!  That is about $300 (USD) per slice which is absurdly expensive!  SUSHIZANMAI, on the other hand, serves customers the same quality of fish with reasonable price.  Why?  Because it was SUSHIZANMAI's owner who bought the tuna for $1.5 million USD!  On top of that, the restaurant is a chain store and each piece of sushi will be offered to customers at a constant price no matter how much the tuna was.  If you are a first timer of sushi restaurant, we would recommend this restaurant owned by a passionate tuna-lover! ※There are many stores of Sushizanmai in Tsukiji, but we strongly recommend this "Honten". We have eaten in some stores of Sushizanmai and found some differences. "Honten" means head store (Honten) of Sushizanmai, that's the reason why Honten is recommended.

The name of this restaurant Hafu originated from the word Katayaburi in Japanese meaning “unconventional or extraordinary”.  Even the locals have never seen putting sushi toppings in the boiled water to have the Shabu Shabu, so called Sushi Shabu Shabu. That is how Hafu (unique) they are around Tsukiji area doing something new and unconventional.  However, what we would like to recommend in this restaurant is the seafood bowl called “Saikyo don” 2,000 yen which is what they are extremely good at.  Saikyo simply means it is the best but it is no joke at all.  In fact, once you try their Saikyo don, you will be stunned of how tender and deep the flame grilled fish are elegantly prepared on top of the tasty vinegared rice called “shrari” which may make you be filled with a blank look of amazement.  Every bite is absolutely pleasure to remember in Hafu and we are certain that it would become an unforgettable and priceless experience for you.  Picrumb is also ready to go back anytime just to have their Saikyo don again.

Itadori has a very unique Tsukiji atmosphere where you will even find some of the seats on the street which has no high-grade sense for its décor, but values an absolute quality of the fresh toppings. Once you have their Kaisen Hitsumabushi (2,285 Yen), you would realize how fresh and tasty the toppings are with their perfect shari (vinegared rice) lightly flavored and mixed exquisitely with all kinds of raw fish in the beautiful wooden pail. It may seem a little bit expensive for a bowl of seafood with rice, but believe it or not, it would be impossible to find such high quality in less than 3,000 yen outside Tsukiji area.  It is undisputedly one of the best restaurants and areas in Tokyo to have the highest quality of seafood bowl.  You may also add toppings such as sea urchin upon request to make the bowl even gorgeous.

The dinner course which excludes the drink is 4,500 yen in Kashigashira.  In this restaurant, the high quality of the fresh raw sashimi is simply phenomenal and how they display those slices of fish meat dished up evenly on a large round plate is just beautiful or rather artistic.  You definitely would not regret coming here for dinner but we recommend you to make the reservation in advance as many locals already know where the best place to have dinner around Tsukiji area!
What also makes Kashigashira special is its unbeatable cost performance in lunch time that lets you enjoy the splendid tuna bowl (maguro butsu don) in only 600 yen in the center of the fish market in Tokyo.  It is in fact one of the most popular menus among the locals that is only available on weekdays.  You may find some sinewy parts in those chopped lean tuna placed on top of the freshly cooked vinegared rice but the quality of those fresh tuna against the price is guaranteed.
The best to have when you are in Kashigashira though, must be the Tsukiji Jogai don (3,000 yen) that costs a little bit pricey compare to the tuna bowl but what you get for return is the exceptional overloaded double bowls of fresh seafood that would make you completely speechless.  It is one of the most delicious seafood bowl around Tsukiji area which was introduced in many TV programs and magazines in Japan.  Once you taste the slice of the fish meat on top of the Tsukiji Jogai Don, it will give you everything that you need to experience in Tsukiji market.

It is widely known that Uni (sea urchin) is one of the most popular sushi toppings for the Japanese.  Although we hear some of the foreigners hesitating to have one because of how hideously it looks and tastes (apparently, it is just too weird for some of them).

On the other hand, it is one rare topping that makes the taste absolutely different if it is not fresh enough.  So if you have only had the sea urchin from the supermarket which usually takes way too long to reach customers mouth after delivering and packing, you may still have a chance to have the real good fresh ones in Uni Tora restaurant specializing in sea urchin in Tsukiji.  They proudly serve the best sea urchin bowl that is super fresh and mild that almost melts in your mouth.

The fresh one from Tsukiji is absolutely different from the one in supermarket which you may feel it pleasantly sweeter and you would not feel its peculiar bitterness that most of the people do not like.  So for those who are already a big fan of sea urchin or for those who have not yet tried the one in Tsukiji before, Picrumb would like to suggest trying it for the last time in Uni Tora to find out how delicious it is.

Inoue is a stand-up Ramen restaurant near Tsukiji market. Originally Tsukiji fish market was not a place for tourist but for fishermen's. They have to eat quickly and be able to work energetic after the meal. Inoue ramen had been providing energy to those fishermen's who had to work with muscles for years. They offer only one menu, a Ramen topped with slices of meat which makes it very easy to eat and get strength. You may come across the ambience of fishermen's busy lifestyle in Inoue, their long loved ramen shop around Tsukiji market.

In Toritoh-Bunten, you might want to try the "Oyako Don" or "Ponjiri don" with Ontama (※extra order of half boiled egg). Both of them are a bowl of rice topped with chicken and half boiled eggs). Toritoh has opened  its door in 1906. It was originally not a restaurant but a chicken buyer for other restaurants. But in 2003 they started a restaurant of their own near the main shop and that is Toritoh-Bunten. You can have the excellent fresh chicken strictly chosen by the professional buyer. If you want to have the standard one with quality, choose the Oyako-Don. If you like to have a bit more juicy coccyx meat that tastes exceptional, choose the Ponjiri-don.
