Recommend: Ebiten Soba

Kamakura Issaan is one of the best places to have soba (buckwheat noodles) around Tokyo station. We have been to this place many times as soba here is spectacular.  It's always nice to have a favorite place where you are quite sure of the taste.

If you are really into Soba, you should know that it is best to have it by "Zaru" and not in a hot broth like how we had it today. You dip the soba noodle into the sause (or rather soup) and try if it is chewy enough. You can't actually feel 100% how it is like if it's in a hot broth as hardness of the noodle will vary depending on the temperature.

But today, we wanted to try the hot one since we already knew "zaru soba" here was excellent although we were not expecting the hot one to be this good.  The deep fried shrimp on top of soba was also excellent.  Perhaps this restaurant may also be able to open a Tempura restaurant. That is how well they prepare the deep fried for the soba. The soup was very tender and noodles matched perfectly with the soup. The hot broth in Issa Ann was favorably balanced and we even thought this could be one type of different soba cuisine that can stand out individually other than "zaru".

Recommend: Shinshu France Kamo Soba

Another place that is worth checking out at Tokyo Station is Hikariya on the 5F of Kitte Building, which has long been a very popular spot with locals.  This soba restaurant originating from the Nagano prefecture has high reputation in Nagano for its Japanese and French fusion cuisine. This soba is Japanese traditional duck soba.

Price is slightly steeper than the usual restaurants from Shinshu France Kamo Soba for 1,680 Yen, but what you get in return is exceptional that will never go wrong.

When it comes to soba, we like to go Hikariya for a firm and reliable meal.

Recommendation: Okinawan Soki Soba

When you got fed up with the typical Japanese food, try the Okinawan cuisine in Tokyo Station where all kinds of different food gather from all around Japan.  Okinawan cuisine is well known for its exceptional soki soba. Soki is a pork prepared to remove excess fat by boiling in the water which later will be stewed to soften the meat even further by putting it in the mixture of soy sauce, sugar, and Okinawan alcohol called Awamori for few hours. At the end, they put its tender Soki meat on top of the Okinawan Soba to complete its fine broth. The soba has a good chewy texture that goes perfectly well with its lightly flavored soup that is just breath taking. You may order the set course for the soki soba which comes with the few side dishes as shown on the pictures.
Overall, Ryutan serves healthy and delicious traditional food from Okinawa that is also very affordable.

Recommend: Chicken Curry with Spinach and Eggs

When it comes to Japanese curry, we like to go Hotspoon for a firm and reliable meal.  It is the kind of place where you will get addicted and makes you want to order everything from the menu.

All curry will be brought with an iron plate which you can see them still boiling inside.  Among many tempting choices on the menu, the chicken curry with spinach and eggs (800 Yen) is just exceptionally good. We have nothing but praises for this curry which was phenomenal.  It is our "must go" place in Tokyo Station for a reasonable and fine local food.

Most of the dishes on the menu are under 1,000 Yen. The long queue during lunch times proofs the popularity of this restaurant.

The best japanese style curry with big chunks of beef and curry stewed to a rich taste. 1600yen may be a little expensive, but considering the amount of beef and time required to stew, the price is understandable. If you have time to shinkansen, it is worth a visit!

Kushiage is one of the most popular food in Osaka, and this restaurant offers the kushiage on top of rice. When you are here, you must try the shrimp. Ebi Katsu Don has 2 big shrimp fries on top of everything, and putting on the sauce made with balsamic vinegar gives it a rich taste you will never forget.

Recommend: Miso katsu don

Miso katsu, the fried pork with miso sauce, is the most popular lunch set menu in Kushi Han. We didn't know pork matches this much with miso sauce which was a good surprise for us.

We like the way they simply (or rather directly) put all slices of katsu on top of rice as it seemed they have the great confidence in what they serve. Just the miso katsu with an egg on top of rice.

It has a convincing taste and we really enjoyed it.  Few veggie sticks for the side menu and warm soup balance out the set menu and that gives the main dish (miso katsu) tastes even better. We would go back again just for their miso katsu.

Recommendation Beef Bowl

Some may think beef bowl is just a simple fast food where you can find it in any fast food chain stores in Japan in extremely affordable price.

The beef bowl in Butasute for lunch set menu is 1,260 Yen which the price is slightly steeper than the usual beef bowl, but what you get in return is exceptional that will never go wrong. The focus is the quality of the meat from Ise which is known for one of the top brand beef in Japan similar to Kobe Matsuzaka beef.  The tenderness and the freshness of the meat is simply a top notch.

Once you taste the beef, you will be able to imagine that Butasute has a reliable outlet that is very professional and impeccable.  It has a perfect blend of the rich taste of the restaurant's secret sauce and the freshness of the meat.  Every bite is pleasure to remember while you can also enjoy the magnificent view of the Tokyo Station.

Recommend: Miso Oden

A true Japanese style cuisine in Marunouchi near Tokyo Station.  It has a very stylish and modern ambience inside well mixed with the traditional Japanese atmosphere.

When you come here, you must eat Miso Oden (1,050 Yen), that is vegetables, pork belly and various other articles of food stewed in a hot thick miso sauce.  Every bite in this bowl (Japanese radish, pork belly, eggs, etc) is a pleasure to remember especially with the Nenohi's special unprocessed Japanese sake that takes your breath away.  Almost every dish in Nenohi is unbelievably rich and fresh especially the fish and vegetables, and is also very affordable for this quality.

I have nothing but praises for the delicious dishes at Kuroudokuriya Nenohi.  The place is located at 6th Floor of Oazo building very close to Tokyo Station.

Recommend: Beef Sinew Simmered by Miso Sauce

The beef sinew simmered by miso sauce. A little bit lacks the volume for a set menu especially for guys but tasted very well (the miso sauce matches with beef perfectly). Not many restaurants provide oden type of set menus around Tokyo Station so in that sense, it was worth trying. This menu is their best recommendation so when you come close by Tokyo station, it may be a good idea to stop by this restaurant. Good oriental interior also was a plus.

Chazuke is a traditional Japanese food, usually considered as rice with green tea poured on it.  In Dashi Chazuke En in Tokyo Station, they pour Japanese soup stock made from fish and kelp called "dashi" instead of green tea which makes the Chazuke so tasty and delicious.  The recommendation here is the Tai Dashi Chazuke (930 yen).  The dashi made of fresh sea bream directly delivered from Uwajima which blends perfectly well with the home-made mildly flavored sesame sauce and the delicious tea on top of the white rice accompanied with pleasantly salty Japanese pickles and fresh vegetables.  It is so delicious that if you were hungry, you might get caught in the situation whether you should do a second bowl or not.  They only have the counter tables inside and it may not be comfortable with a large group of people, but what you get in return is just exceptional.  If you like Chazuke or rice bowls in Japan, Dashi Chazuke En is definitely the place to go.

Kintame restaurant, known for its excellent Japanese pickles, was founded more than 130 years ago in Kyoto in Meiji era. As the reputation for the vegetables in Kyoto has historically been good, the market for the delicious Kyoto pickles (Kyo Tsukemono) using those fresh vegetables has also grown bigger in the past century.

The pickles in Kintame are very simple, fresh, and elegant. It leaves the essence of the fresh vegetables to make it not too strong in flavor, but modestly salty which makes the pickles taste slightly elegant. You may have those pickles simply with the white rice or pour some Japanese tea on the pickles on top of the rice to make the traditional "ochazuke". It is not only delicious but also very traditional which may give you a valuable food experience in Japan. Perhaps, if you are a vegetarian, this restaurant may also be a good choice.

Recommendation: Hayashi Omelette Rice

Hayashi rice is one of the popular dishes in Japan which contains beef, mushrooms and onions with the delicious simmered demi-glace sauce (that contains tomato sauce with red wine) on top which may look very similar to curry rice in Japan. It is said to be the name "Hayashi Rice" was given by Yuteki Hayashi, the founder of Maruzen company in 1869.

The restaurant we are going to introduce today is its traditional and the first place ever to serve the Hayashi Rice in Japan in Maruzen located at Nihonbashi area. It may be a good chance for you to visit this historical place if you ever had a chance to walk around Tokyo station during your stay.  The restaurant has a long history very well known for its exceptional Hayashi Rice, but on the contrary, it is also very reasonably priced (most of the lunch menus are under 1,500 yen).  The popular menu is Hayashi Omelette Rice 1,250 yen (the Omelette rice with traditional Hayashi Sauce) which comes with the fresh salad for your side dish. The traditional Hayashi sauce perfectly blended with the rice in Maruzen Café is absolutely phenomenal.  You should try it by yourself!

Recommend: Pork Miso Soup and Leaf Mustard with Sesami Rice (豚汁と胡麻高菜ごはんセット)

This was the best pork miso soup (tonjiru) we have ever had.  Misogen is a small restaurant located at Kitte building that serves great healthy food that bases miso.  You may order pork miso soup with goma-takana (leaf mustard with sesami) rice as a set menu (850 yen) which is Picrumb's best pick in Misogen.  The miso soup is very dense flavored in Misogen with a considerable amount of braised vegetables including pork, carrots, tofu, konnyaku, Japanese radish, potatoes, cabbages, and onions stewed inside.  It is very rare to find such restaurant that sells miso soup in such way as miso soup is a typical Japanse dish which you can find it anywhere in Japan.  Apparently soup must be very different in a certain way in order to make the locals come back.  And you will know, if you taste their pork miso soup once, why we are back again today.

Recomendation: Tantoro Set (たんとろセット)

The beef tongue, so called gyutan, is one of the popular food in Japan well known for its unique chewy texture with its fine taste of the rare part of the beef.  It actually makes the Japanese locals surprize when they hear about many foreigners do not eat beef tongues, but it is really not as surprizing and gross as it sounds.  Once you try the exceptional charcoal grilled beef tongue in Negishi, you will definitely become a big fan of it and may end up looking for a word "gyutan" in your county whenever you find the Japanese restaurants on the streets.  As we said, it is one of the rare parts of the beef, it may cost just a little bit pricey for a lunch set (Tantoro Set, 1,530 yen) we recommend, but what you get for return is the six pieces of the fine thick meat with tasty tail soup, a bowl of grain rice and a grated yam which are known to be very healthy and good for beauty.  The beef tongue in Negishi is indeed excellent.  Try it and you will not regret it!
