The grilled eel, so called "Hitsumabushi" in Japanese, was first invented by Atsuta Houraiken in Meiji era.  Grilled eel has become well known world wide now but it all started from this little traditional Japanese house out of no where.  So if you are looking for the real eel cuisine in Japan (or in the world), you have come to the right place.  You may have to queue for few minutes to get seated but it is definitely worth it.
Once they allow you to come inside the restaurant, the first impressive thing you would find is the beautiful Japanese garden that stands quietly, and modestly welcoming you for your arrival.  It is absolutely a fantastic view from outside where it would make you want to take few minutes to take photos.  Then after you enter the door, one of the polite staffs will take you to one of the tables with chopsticks neatly prepared.  If you are lucky, you may also be able to get seated right in front of the beautiful Japanese garden by the glass window.
When you are here, it is no point not ordering the grilled eel (3600 yen) so order one for yourself and have some delicious warm tea to wait for the exceptional Japanese eel cuisine to arrive.
The grilled eel in Atsuta Houraiken is so tender that has a great savory smell, beautifully cooked with a remarkable depth of flavour.  It is just exceptional right down to the last bite while everyone on the table will be blown away by how good it is.  You can enjoy 3 ways of having their fresh grilled eel which the restaurant strongly recommends you to do.  First, you must separate the grilled eel to 4 cuts using the server.  Then eat them with 1. plain, 2. add seasoning, 3. add seasoning and bouillon.  You can choose how to eat the last one by whatever you liked the most in above three.
To summarize, we have nothing but praises for this restaurant.  Atsuta Houraiken is definately worth visiting even when you are staying in Nagoya Station and takes about half an hour to reach there.  Again, this is the place where grilled eel cuisine was born.

Inou serves very firm and reliable grilled eel in Nagoya which is widely accepted by the picky Nagoya locals.  We have seen many Nagoyans taking customers from overseas to this local restaurant as if they know they can pretty much sure satisfy them with its exceptional hitsumabushi (grilled eel).  When you come to this restaurant after waiting few minutes in line, order their standard hitsumabushi (2500 yen) and you will be amazed by its highest quality of their eel being grilled on top of the freshly cooked rice bowl mixed with their splendid tasty sauce.  Every bite is indeed pleasure to remember.  You can enjoy 4 ways of having it by separating the bowl into 4.  Have the first one without adding anything, then add seasoning for the second one, add seasoning and bouillon for the third one, and for the last one, select whatever you liked the most in above three to finish your meal.  Inou may not be well known world wide but it surely has the world class taste which can be proudly introduced to anyone from overseas.  If you ever had a chance to visit Nagoya Station, make sure to meal here.

Maruya's chefs have a perfect balance in grilling the eel that definitely requires high technique that they have fostered in the long history.  Inside the fish is so tender and the outside pleasantly grilled with charcoal which you can feel its savory smell that would spur your appetite.  The tasty sauce is doing a great job too bringing out the true taste of the eel.   When you are having hitsumabushi, make sure to try 3 ways of having it.  Go ahead and separate the bowl into 4 and try them by: 1. MisoKatsu was first invented by Yabaton in Nagoya.  It is the pork cutlet served with special miso based sauce so called misodare.  You will be quite surprised to know Yabaton's high quality pork cutlet that is as tender as the one in Anzu Ginza, one of the best pork cutlet restaurants in Tokyo.   Yabaton proudly puts its delicious sauce on top of the cutlets after they bring you the dish only to deliver it to you with most fresh condition. When you come to this restaurant, you should definitely order their signature dish, Teppan Misokatsu (1800 yen) that was served on teppan (metal plate) while you can still hear the good sound of pork being grilled.  Once you have one of the slices on the plate, you will realize why there are so many locals queuing to have their exceptional misokatsu.  It just blows your mind.  The sauce is very sophisticated which you can probably recognize its deep flavor that was established in its long history.  When you are in Nagoya, don't leave Yabaton without trying their awesome misokatsu.

What makes it so great about Tonkatsu Ishikawa is that you can have the high quality hirekatsu (pork fillet) for an extremely reasonable price.  If you were in Tokyo, it will not be possible to find such pork fillet accompanied with akadashi soup, rice, Japanese pickles, and some sliced cabbages underneath the meat for 860 yen.  The cabbages are free of charge, you can have them as much as you can.  What a bargain.  The miso sauce on top of its amazing pork is relatively sweeter and a little bit spicy which makes its already tasty katsu taste even better.  Honestly, we still don't figure out how they can manage to make profit by serving such higher quality meat in such bargain price.  If you are hungry and looking for an exceptional pork cutlets in Nagoya, Ishikawa serves the delicious tonkatsu faster and cheaper with a volume.  It's actually quite hard to find restaurant like that in Japan.

Kanou is a hidden restaurant that is located at a small narrow street in Sakae where you will only find the local customers who are well aware about its famous Misokatsu Don which was invented by this restaurant 60 years ago.  Kanou's special Misokatsu Don using the vegetable oil to deep fry the fresh pork is extremely thick and tasty with their delicious miso sauce and an egg in the middle blending perfectly well with the kastu.  The batter coating and the sauce are not as heavy as you think, but rather lightly flavored and it is pleasantly unstressful to eat especially for the ladies and elderly people.  You will also be amazed of their Misokatsu that we thought has one of the highest quality in Nagoya.  No wonder why the locals never stop loving it for more than 60 years even though the restaurant is quite hard to find.   When you come to this legendary Misokatsu Don restaurant by any chance, order their Ganso Misokatsu Don (1200 yen) and you will not regret it.

Founded in more than 50 years ago loved by the locals, Hirokoji Kitchen Matsuya serves excellent misokatsu pork cutlet in Nagoya. The Ankake Nagoya Misokatsu set (1480 yen) is a miso based pork cutlet dressed with a thick starchy sauce that is very juicy and tasty accompanied with freshly cooked rice, salad, and soup.  You will see many local fans of this restaurant in lunch time ordering their signature dish that can be eaten only in Kitchen Matsuya.  The batter coating is not as thick as you imagine but rather lightly coated to enjoy the genuine flavor of the fresh pork with their special miso based sauce.  Every bite is definitely pleasure to remember.  The building seems a little bit outdated but that makes it look better to feel the history too. When you are looking for an exceptional ankake on top of the misokatsu which is quite different from the standard, this is the place to go.  Needless to say, the set menu is a bargain for such higher quality.

Gomitori in Sakae is an Izakaya restaurant that serves delicious Tebasaki (chicken wings) that is very juicy and tasty.  The chicken wings are also slightly bigger than the ones you see in other restaurants that specialize in chicken cuisine.  You can feel the great chewy texture of the wings which would make everyone on your table absolutely happy but make sure not to order too much as it is so good that it might make you eat unstoppable.  There are also other traditional side dishes you may want to try since you are in Nagoya such as miso based kushi yaki (spit roasting) and oden (vegetables, fish dumplings and various other articles of food stewed in a thin soy soup, and served hot).  They are without doubt excellent too.  When you are in Nagoya with your friends and families looking for a great restaurant to experience real Nagoyan cuisines, Gomitori is definitely an excellent choice.
