After you visit Fushimi Inari Shrine to take the photos of the beautiful Senbon Torii, look for Picrumb’s carefully selected restaurants for your lunch before you head back to your hotel. In fact, there are some great local dishes you can try while you are there such as the traditional Inari sushi and roast Japanese quails and sparrows (depending on the season).  And for those who are hesitant to have the roasted birds, you may also try the outstanding ramen and udon near the shrine and some good Japanese sweets for your souvenir. Enjoy!

Nezameya was founded over 450 years ago well known for its roasted sparrows and quails.  They are, in fact, one of those rare dishes you do not usually encouter in your daily lives on your dining table (not even the locals do not dare to eat sparrows and quails).  But what makes it great is that they taste unexpectedly delicious unlike those odd stuffs that look awful as well as taste awful.  If you are willing to expose yourself into different culture to experience something new, give it a try!  Meanwhile, the standard dish like unagi rice bowl (Japanese eel) that you can see them being roasted in front of the entrance with the alluring smell is also exceptional.

You may also try their famous Inari-zushi which is commonly eaten anywhere in Japan but having Inari-zushi at the head shrine of sect is certainly a different experience.

If you ever had a chance to visit Kendonya, make sure to have their udon. The udon noodles in Kendonya is famous for its excellent chewy texture called "koshi" which needs a very high technique for making one. The perfect al dente with the soup called "dashi jiru", that is quite difficult to make, will also surprises you with every sip. It is a typical Kyoto style udon that is relatively light, but has a very deep flavor that is sophisticated in every detail. The staffs are also very energetic and lively in a friendly manner to all customers. The restaurant is located little bit far away from the shrine (about five minutes walk), but it is definitely worth to visit.

Ren's soy sauce based Chuka Soba, stuffed with full of ingredients in a medium sized broth that tastes more like seafood rather than just beef or pork, always looks magnificent. You may notice the secret ingredient of citrus skins inside that makes the soup taste unbelievably refreshing and a slice of relatively large chashu pork that makes the broth look mouth-watering as well as eye catching. On top of that, there is a half boiled sliced onions with some bamboo shoots well mixed with the chewy al dente that completes its fine broth. When you get hungry after walking around Fushimi Inari Shrine, a bowl of ramen is always waiting for you in Ren.

The restaurant Umiya looks rather like a cafe from outside, but it is a genuine ramen shop that serves outstanding Si Chuan dandan ramen. The fresh minced meat with a red spicy ra-yu oil well mixed with one of the most popular Kyoto vegetables called "mizuna" neatly sliced and prepared on top of its rich broth. The relatively soft noodles of good chewy texture that perfectly match with the spicy dandan is also praiseworthy. Once you start having their Si Chuan style in Umiya, you are about to get carried away by its deliciousness.

When you visit Fushimi Inari, it is not unusual to find the locals visiting the place only to have Futaba's "Mame Daifuku" (daifuku mochi rice cake with bean paste).  As it is one of the most popular Japanese sweets around the area, it is almost like a cliche to visit here after the shrine and the restaurants to have the famous roasted sparrows and quails.  The "mame daifuku" in Futaba is as tender as the marshmallows.  The sweet bean paste inside that contains little bit of salt well balanced with its crunchy peas is just superb.  It is definitely something that is worth to try since you are in Fushimi Inari!

Hougyokudou was founded over few decades ago in Showa times and it is well known for the rice cracker with the face of a fox, so-called Inari Senbei.  Fox is a symbol of Fushimi Inari Shrine which is said to be an errand of the god of Inari (Oinari san) as you can find few statues of them at the shrine.

Not only how they illustrates the face of a fox in an unique way, the rice cracker also tastes superb with a little bit of white miso (lightly sweet) pasted outside with a savory smell of the roasted sesames on top of it.  You can actually see the artisans roasting those tasty "senbeis" in front of you too.  It is certainly one of the most popular souvenirs for the visitors in Fushimi Inari Shrine with a little bit of a story behind.

Here is the cutest Japanese sweets known for its "marumochi" made of strained sweet red beans inside wrapped roundly with the crunchy outside mochi layer that has an excellent soft chewy texture. The flavor is not overly sugary but rather pleasantly sweet which is a kind of food that you can keep eating almost unconsciously until you realize there is no more left in the bag. The cute round sweets from Marumochi is always popular for the souvenir and also for the light snack after the visit to the Fushimi Inari shrine. It is absolutely delicious.
